United in Flow: Celebrating the World of Hip Hop
United in Flow, Toronto’s socially conscious hip hop movement is lead by producer James Pew of Euphonic Sound Recording Studio. In Oct. of 2010 United in Flow released Vol. 1 – a collaborative concept album with over 50 artistic contributors. From Mcs to beatboxers to poets to dancers and visual artists each contributor gave there own interpretation of what it means to be united.
United in flow celebrates the community of hip hop in Toronto and beyond. In addition to producing hip hop recordings and shows United in Flow also works with a variety of groups (ie. Unity Charity & Alexandra Community Center) on hip hop oriented community building initiatives (much of it youth focused).
Currently in the works is a new collaborative recording entitled United in Flow:Say No To The Police State, a politically motivated concept album aimed at giving voice to victims of abuse of power (from the Toronto Police Services to the G20 debacle). As always United in Flow remains community oriented, solutions focused and positive in their message, even when dealing with controversial issues like abuse of power.
About 2010′s United in Flow Vol. 1
A charity fundraiser, United in Flow is a Euphonic Sound Community collaborative project showcasing local indies through music, lyrics, dance and visual arts.
United in Flow, Celebrating the World of Hip Hop Vol. 1 fundraiser was a night of live performances, that brought together the Toronto Hip Hop Community through music, lyrics, dance and visual arts. Central to the event was the Broken Window Records MixTape release (UIF Vol. 1), a collaborative compilation featuring the United in Flow performers. The United in Flow Vol. 1artists were chosen through their participation in a six-month competition hosted through the Euphonic Sound Community.
The charity partner Unity, provided the United in Flow Vol. 1 mixtape artists the opportunity to give back to their community. Unity is a youth led oriented hip hop charity dedicated to showing youth how using positive forms of artistic self-expression leads to making positive life choices.
The Competition
The United in Flow competition hosted through the Euphonic Sound community resulted in the selection of the most talented vocalists to be featured on the MixTape release, and at the live event.
Audition videos were embedded on unitedinflow.com, where members of the Euphonic Sound Community as well as the general public voted for their favorite vocalist.
A panel of Euphonic Sound Community judges selected the top talent; the number of votes and the size of the artists fan-base were a critical factor in choosing the United in Flow artists. This insured a wide reach across the networks of the individual performers, resulting in greater interest in the event.
The MixTape
Consistent with the traditions of the hip hop art form, the United in Flow is a collaborative project. All songs included in Vol. 1 were composed and produced specifically for United in Flow. Instrumentals were provided by the Euphonic team of producers and lyrics & vocals by the top talent who participated in the competition.
The United in Flow MixTape was professionally produced, mixed and mastered, and was released on the Euphonic Sound Community record label, Broken Window Records.
