To Inform, Entertain and Educate; SPEAKout Poetry
Cats: united in flow journal|This past weekend at the Unity Charity Kickoff Event we got a chance to hook up with one of Unity‘s other community partners, SPEAKout Poetry. If you have not heard of them yet, I am sure you will very soon…and not just because I am about to tell you all about them! If you want the visual aid, check the video from their upcoming documentary below!
Besma Soltan, the manager of SPEAKout came down to the studio this week to sit down and chat. It really is no surprise that Besma immediately clicked with the United In Flow team. SPEAKout poetry shares many of our ideals, engaging local talent, fostering unity, providing a forum for people to be heard. Slam poetry has many ties within the hip hop community as well. Besma sums up the mission of SPEAKout beautifully in an interview she did with the Young Social Entrepreneurs of Canada: “it aims to engage Canada with all its diversity and multiculturalism, and show all of Canada that there is much more that brings us together than what pushes us apart.” How could we not love this?
The UIF team will be repping at SPEAKout’s Summer Slam, happening at the Royal Ontario Museum on August 6th. Its past winners, along with more talent will all be in competition for $800 in top prize, $400 in second place, and $200 in third place. Come chill with us, it promises to be an evening full of inspiration, talent, and some real true hip hop. You can buy tickets here and make sure to check the video below!
